Last March, I took a trip out to a health and fitness expo with a pretty clear mission: to find the right people to help us take the next step forward at GMCF. Not just the right equipment, but the right partners.
If you know us at all, you know this: We don’t make decisions like this based on a spec sheet. We make them based on people, trust, and whether or not we feel like someone actually sees and values what we’re building here. We’re not a big-box gym. We’re a small, family-run, community-first place. And I needed to find companies that would treat us that way.
The Companies We Chose (and Why)
One of the easiest “yes” decisions was TRUE Fitness. From the first conversation, it just clicked. They understood our size, our mission, and the level of care we expect, not just for our members, but for our space. They’ve already provided our new treadmills and stair climbers and will upgrade our selectorized (Nautilus-style) equipment.
Then there’s Defiant Strength. This one hit a little differently. Part of it was the people. Part of it was the equipment. But part of it was the name. [Defiant. /dəˈfīənt/ To do things differently. Not always taking the easiest path. Standing firm in what you believe is right, even when it’s not the norm.] And if I’m being really honest… there’s probably a little stubbornness in there too. The kind that says, “No, we’re going to do this our way and we’re going to do it well.” I have a feeling if my Mom were still around, she’d smile at that connection and say, “Yeah… that tracks.” Defiant Strength will be helping us bring in our new strength and cable equipment and it feels like a pretty fitting partnership.
We’ll still use Rogue Fitness here and there (we’ve got plenty of that black-and-white logo already) and Matrix Fitness will help round things out. I’ll admit, I hesitated at first with Matrix Fitness because they’re a much larger company, and I wasn’t sure how we’d fit in their world. But at the end of the day, their equipment checked the boxes we needed better than any other company. And part of good decision-making is being willing to say, “This is the right tool, even if it wasn’t my first instinct.”
We Didn’t Just Guess, We Asked You
Before we made any big moves, we went back to something really important: Your feedback. If you remember, we put out a fitness survey last summer. That gave us real, honest data from the people who use this space every single day. Not assumptions. Not trends. Actual input from our community. And that mattered, a lot.
The Reality Behind the Scenes (aka… Tom is a Wizard)
Let’s talk about our current equipment for a second. Some of our Nautilus pieces are over 40 years old. Forty. Years. Now to be clear, we believe deeply in reducing, reusing, and recycling. We’ve held onto this equipment as long as we possibly could… and then some.
A huge reason it’s lasted as long as it has is because of Tom, our Facility Manager. Tom has gone above and beyond in ways most people never see – sewing his own upholstery covers, tracking down discontinued parts like a detective, and even soldering pieces together just to keep things going. At this point, I’m pretty sure he could rebuild half the gym from scratch if we asked him to. He’s done an incredible job. But even with all that effort, it’s becoming harder and harder to keep things running. Parts are nearly impossible to find, repairs are temporary at best, and the wear-and-tear is catching up. We’ve squeezed just about everything we can out of this equipment… and yes, it’s officially time to let most go to the graveyard.
How We Made the Decisions
This wasn’t a “flip a switch and order new stuff” kind of process. We hadn’t rushed any part of this process before and we weren’t going to start now. We brought our team together for a roundtable discussion. Leaders from Physical Therapy, Fitness, Personal Training, and Facility Management went piece by piece through the entire floor. We talked through who each piece serves, what’s working, what’s not, and what we might be missing. There were a lot of thoughtful conversations, some debates, and a shared commitment to getting this right. The goal isn’t just to upgrade, it’s to upgrade intentionally, in a way that supports beginners, experienced lifters, rehab clients, athletes, and everyone in between.
Now, to be real for a moment – this is a big investment. There’s no way around that. We’re working with our amazing partners at Community National Bank to help us finance this upgrade in a way that’s responsible and sustainable, because we’re always balancing two things: giving you the best experience we can, while also protecting the long-term future of this place.
And honestly… we’ve been patient. Six years patient. Waiting until the timing made sense, the partnerships felt right, and we could do this in a way that truly aligns with who we are.
And now, we’re ready.
What This Really Means
This isn’t just about new machines. It’s about creating a better experience for you. It’s about supporting your goals more effectively. It’s about making sure the tools in our space match the level of care, effort, and community that exists within it.
You deserve that.
We’re excited. We’re a little nervous (because that’s what big steps feel like). And we’re really proud of where this is heading.
More to come soon… including what we actually picked!
As always, thank you for being part of this.
Everyday Stronger.
– Cady
